What We Do
At SWFT we provide education to students from two medical schools; the University of Buckingham and the University of Warwick.
The University of Buckingham, established in 1973, was the UK’s first independent university. The medical school opened in 2015 and delivers a compressed 4.5 year undergraduate medical degree.
The medical school (UBMS) has full GMC accreditation, allowing the students to enter the foundation programme.
Due to being an independent medical school, it is not subject to the government cap on international applicants, and our student population represents this.
The first students from UBMS graduated in 2019.
University of Buckingham Medical School (UBMS)
The course is divided into phase 1 – primarily delivered at the university campus, and phase 2 where the students are spread throughout several hospitals.
The students from UBMS that come to Warwick Hospital in phase 2 stay with us for two years and complete a variety of placements in their junior and senior rotations.
The University of Warwick Medical School offers a postgraduate medical degree over four years. This is the largest graduate-entry course in the UK with an intake of around 200 graduates each year.
Students rotate round local hospitals including SWUFT covering a variety of placements so may visit SWUFT multiple times over the course of their degree.

Accessibility
The GMC states in Welcomed and Valued that there are two overriding expectations for all medical education organisations in the UK with respect to disability. This applies to medical schools at the undergraduate level and postgraduate training organisations. Firstly, organisations must comply with UK equality legislation. Secondly, organisations must meet GMC standards and requirements for medical education and training in the UK.
As a department, we are committed to providing teaching that is accessible to all, as outlined by the guidance. All members of the medical education team undertake training in providing accessible teaching in conjunction with Warwick Medical School.
Anti-Racism
South Warwickshire University Foundation NHS Trust has a zero tolerance policy for racist and discriminatory behaviour.
As an education department, we recognise that racism goes beyond conscious and open hostility towards individuals or communities because of their culture, colour, nationality, race or ethnic background.
Racism can be subtle and unconscious and we are therefore committed to being anti-racist, demonstrating active and conscious effort to work against all aspects of overt and systemic racism.
While there has been a strong commitment to create a fair and equal society, racism and racial inequalities still exist in our everyday lives.
By embracing and adopting an anti-racism approach we are consciously structuring our activities to reflect our values and actions to address our systemic barriers to race equality. This requires solidarity, bravery and honesty in recognising that there remains much to do and we must work collectively to listen to experiences and to tackle these inequalities.
Inclusivity
Tackling discrimination and inequality in medicine is an urgent priority for everyone supporting the health services. It’s also vital to helping retain doctors working in the UK and to support high quality patient care.
In the medical education department we want all learners to feel represented, included and involved. As part of our commitment to this; all members of the team are part of the Rainbow Badge Scheme. Teaching materials are audited to ensure representation of all members of the community, with particular emphasis on ensuring clinical photography includes people with a variety of skin tones.
Mind the Gap is an excellent resource for dermatological photography representing a variety of skin tones.
Statement regarding ‘Conversion Therapy’
The Medical Schools Council (MSC) is the representative body for UK medical schools.
In light of the global calls for a ban by the United Nations, and in light of the UK government’s consultation work to fulfil its commitment to ban LGBTQ+ conversion therapy, the MSC unequivocally believes such so-called therapies have no place in clinical practice and thus these are not taught.
Medical schools teach evidence based medicine to their students and there is no credible evidence base to support conversion therapy.

Postgraduate Medical Education Centre

The Medical Education Centre is located at Warwick Hospital on Lakin Road (on the left hand side just past the entrance to the main visitors car park if you are approaching from Millers Road).
John Turner Education Centre
Visitors Car Park, Warwick Hospital, CV34 5HT
The John Turner Education Centre is located inside the Main Visitors Car Park at Warwick Hospital.
Acorn House Simulation Centre
Coventry Road, Warwick CV34 4RT
Acorn House is a purpose-built accessible Simulation and Clinical Skills centre situated a short distance away from the main hospital site. There is no authorised parking at Acorn House —please park on the Trust site and allow 7-8 mins to walk to the facility; after turning left out of the Medical Education Centre, walk to the end of Lakin Road; just before the railway bridge, turn left along Station Avenue and continue to the end of this road where you will see Acorn House.
