Locally Employed Doctors (LED)
Who are LEDs?
Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs) are a vital part of the NHS workforce, often working in clinical fellow, trust-grade, or non-training roles. Though outside formal training programmes, LEDs provide frontline care across all specialties.
What do we offer our LEDs?
-
Structured, Protected Teaching Time: Bi-weekly sessions on Tuesdays (2:00–3:00 pm), providing regular access to clinical updates, NHS systems, leadership, and career development topics.
Interactive & Inclusive Learning: Delivered by senior clinicians, educators, and guest speakers, with active discussions, Q&A, and CPD certification for portfolio use.
Growing Engagement & Expansion: Launched in early 2025, the forum now includes LEDs from Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Surgery — with plans to expand to more specialties and multidisciplinary themes.
-
Personalised, Confidential Support: Bi-weekly 1:1 sessions (Tuesdays 3:00–4:00 pm, by appointment) with the Deputy Clinical Tutor, offering a safe space for tailored guidance and discussion.
Focused on Career and Wellbeing: Topics include career planning, CESR advice, portfolio building, pastoral support, and managing workplace challenges.
Positive Impact and Continuity: Highly valued by participants, these sessions have improved morale, built confidence, and supported clearer progression for LEDs within the NHS.
-
Broader specialty involvement in the LED Educational Forum and promote interprofessional learning opportunities, fostering wider engagement and collaboration.
Enhanced cultural and pastoral support for international medical graduates (IMGs)
Planning development of a centralised online hub for educational resources and session booking
Our commitment to LEDs
We are dedicated to ensuring all LEDs are:
Supported with access to structured teaching and mentorship
Empowered with knowledge of NHS systems, rights, and opportunities
Equipped to progress confidently toward training, specialty roles, or portfolio careers
