Teach the Teacher
On 27th September 2025, the Medical Education Department at SWFT proudly hosted its first Teach the Teacher course for resident doctors - a pioneering initiative and the first of its kind to be offered free of charge to our residents.
The full-day programme, held at Acorn House, covered the principles of adult learning, lesson planning, simulation-based education, technology-enhanced learning, and giving effective feedback. The course is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians, allowing participants to claim 7 CPD points.
The course was led by an experienced faculty, including Dr Bhavisha Vasta, Dr Rathinavel Shanmugam, Dr Hannah Webber, Dr Charu Palta, Dr Raj Khera, and Dr Hina Shahid, supported by Rob Knell and Judith Morris.
The day concluded with participants delivering their own mini-teaching sessions, covering a diverse range of topics: from medicine to surgery to changing a nappy, and even how to avoid a bear attack!
Resident feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants reporting greater confidence and a stronger toolkit of practical teaching skills to use in their daily clinical roles. Every attendee said they would recommend the course to fellow resident doctors. Importantly, the initiative also supports resident doctor wellbeing by directly responding to feedback about the challenges of securing training posts, helping residents strengthen their portfolios and progress in their careers. This resounding endorsement highlights SWFT’s commitment to developing the next generation of clinical educators and ultimately improving patient care through high-quality teaching.
Medical Summer School
On Saturday the 18th May 2024 we held our inaugural Medical Summer School for young people local to Warwick who were interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. We had a packed out room at Acorn House, with lots of enthusiasm and questions. The multidisciplinary faculty comprised eight members of SWFT staff from management, nursing, work experience team and medical backgrounds. We also had eight of our University of Buckingham medical students join the faculty to share their experiences.
The morning saw the young people learning clinical skills such as airway management, assessment of breathing, and the basics of undertaking a blood pressure and heart rate. During the afternoon, delegates put these skills into action in the state of the art simulation suite in Acorn House, through a simulation of a patient with sepsis. They also attended workshops including Working in the NHS – the UKs largest employer and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. The day concluded with a series of panels to allow the delegates to ask questions of the faculty regarding their routes into the NHS and how their job fits into the picture of patient centred care. Big thanks go to the Work Experience team for organising the logistics, and the faculty who put huge amounts of work in to make the day a success!
